The UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management was co-host of the 16th Philippine Food Expo, a 3-day celebration of Filipino culinary expertise. The event was held at the World Trade Center Metro Manila last April 12-14, 2024. The event鈥檚 theme for this year was Western Visayas. The event was marked by various culinary competitions, cooking demos, seminars, and a large exhibition of over 300 vendors.

As co-host, CTHM handled the Culinary Challenge Competition Briefing, held on March 3, 2024, at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. (BGPOP) Building鈥檚 Multi-function Room (MFR), while the Food Styling & Photography Competition was also held at the BGPOP Lobby and Mezzanine on March 23, 2024. Both events were internally organized by the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) 3HCE1鈥檚 Solasta Productions, led by Mr. Wyett White Lee as the course facilitator and Mr. Rod Fredric S. Villamarin as the Overall Chairperson, as part of their partial fulfillment of the requirements for THM52027: Introduction to Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events Management.

The highly anticipated event commenced with a remarkable turnout, welcoming 3,074 guests on its opening, where The 91性息港 Chorus of Arts and Letters set the tone for the event with a moving invocation followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem.

The expo’s opening statements were delivered by a roster of prominent figures who have played pivotal roles in the agriculture and food industry. Among them were Mr. Roberto Angelo O. Amores II, Director of PhilFoodEx; Hon. Cynthia A. Villar, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food; Hon. Francisco Tiu P. The three days featured culinary competitions such as the Philippine Regional Table Setting Competition, Kitchen Masters, PINASarap Breakfast, Modern Filipino Dessert, Healthy Pasta, Mystery Ingredient, and the UST Dream Team competition, featuring 2nd to 3rd year Culinary Entrepreneurship and Hospitality Leadership students from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management. The 91性息港 College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (UST-CTHM), in collaboration with the M.I.C.E Classes of 3HCE1鈥揨arkana Productions and 3HCE3鈥擬arahuyo Productions, hosted the 12th Saint Hyacinth Students鈥 Research Colloquium and Lecture, which featured two international hotel and tourism professors. The experts emphasized that flexible research methods can remedy post-pandemic setbacks in the tourism industry, held on April 24, 2023 as part of the 5-day Philippine International Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference 2023 (PITH-ReCon 2023).

In her talk entitled 鈥淩edefining Hospitality Business Management in the Next Norm,鈥 Prof. Cathy Hsu from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University鈥檚 School of Hotel and Tourism Management said that a 鈥渃omprehensive and rigorous鈥 qualitative approach in topics such as post-pandemic consumer behavior validates research findings.

Additionally, qualitative research is uncommon in the tourism industry with a decreased credibility unlike in anthropological and sociological areas, as highlighted by Prof. Jerome Agrusa from the University of Hawaii, in his talk entitled 鈥淩edefining Tourism on the Next Norm.鈥 Agrusa urged flexibility among research approaches that shared four constructs such as truth value, applicability, consistency, and neutrality to remedy over-tourism and promote regenerative tourism, a trend of sharing one goal. Flexible research approaches can ensure tourism sustainability and viability from economic downturns such as exploitation of destinations and workers, he added.

Citing the eye-tracking and facial expression analysis, Hsu also highlighted the credibility of quantitative research due to its objective approach to determine the psychophysiological methods over qualitative approaches such as interviews and surveys. She also warned against a potential inaccuracy of qualitative methods, as it is only limited to subjective emotions.

The lectures were part of the weeklong Philippine International Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference 2023 (PITH-ReCon 2023).
