was one of the twenty-five delegates to the 2020 Southeast Asia International and Joint Research Workshop sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan. The workshop took place from February 4-15, 2020, at the National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.

Experts from Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia served as speakers, covering a wide range of topics pertaining to climate change and sustainable energy. Talks were coupled with field trips, laboratory visits, as well as group discussions and presentations.

Belmonte, a faculty member of the and a researcher of the , holds a doctorate degree in chemical engineering. Her dissertation developed a novel framework for the high-level planning of large-scale biochar-based carbon management networks using mathematical programming. The model was developed to support the use of carbonized biomass as a soil enhancer and as a form of carbon sequestration.

The program brought together scholars from Southeast Asia and Taiwan in order to provide a collaboration platform that can bridge scholars.

On November 14, 2019, delivered an oral presentation at the IBI Biochar World Congress 2019, which was held from 10-14 November in Korea University, Seoul, Korea. This congress with the theme 鈥淭owards Biochar Global Market Development鈥 was held with the expectation of a paradigm shift toward the development of the next generation of biochar with more attention toward enhancing the biochar global market.

Belmonte鈥檚 paper was entitled 鈥淣ovel framework for large-scale biochar-based carbon management networks (BCMNs)鈥. The BCMNs extend from the production and transportation of biochar from different sources down to its application to agricultural lands. The framework is comprised of component mathematical models that capture the salient features of biochar research as currently envisioned in the literature. This work thus addresses the research gap on decision-making, planning and implementation of BCMNs. The optimization framework provides a sustainable strategy to guide policymaking to aid the proper deployment of commercial-scale BCMNs to contribute to climate mitigation. Biochar, a product obtained from thermochemical conversion of residual biomass, can be deliberately applied to soil to significantly sequester carbon from the atmosphere and simultaneously improve soil fertility.

IBI Biochar World Congress has provided a unique platform for sharing knowledge on all aspects of biochar among a broad international scientific community, policy makers and industrial personnel.

Among the plenary speakers was Prof. Johannes Lehmann, a distinguished biochar scientist and a professor at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, USA. Prof. Lehmann is the co-founder of the International Biochar Initiatives (IBI) and member of the board of directors of the IBI.

The congress was organized by The Korea Biochar Research Center and Korea University together with the International Biochar Initiative, Foshan University in China, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, UK Biochar Research Center in United Kingdom, Cornell University in USA, Henan Agricultural University in China, Shenyang Agricultural University in China and The Korean Society of Environmental Biology.

On July 18, 2019, of the聽聽was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology 鈥 Science Education Institute (SEI) as one of its Outstanding Scholar-Graduates, as part of the annual National Science and Technology Week celebration.

Belmonte鈥檚 doctoral dissertation, entitled 鈥淒evelopment of an Optimization Framework for Biochar-Based Carbon Management Networks,鈥 鈥渇ocused on developing computer models to provide decision support for the use of carbonized biomass as a soil enhancer and as a form of carbon sequestration鈥he work was pioneering in terms of integrating the relevant and practical aspects of biochar research into a systematic framework for the high-level planning of large-scale biochar-based carbon management networks.鈥

The project has so far led to five Scopus-indexed publications in major journals (e.g., Sustainable Production and Consumption; Journal of Cleaner Production; and Current Opinion in Chemical Engineering) and conference proceedings and three oral presentations.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Belmonte expressed gratitude to DOST-SEI and the ERDT for the scholarship grant, to UST for the grant of her study leave, and to Academician Prof. Raymond R. Tan, for 鈥渉is crucial guidance and support throughout my PhD journey. It was a real privilege to work under the tutelage of a well-reputed and versatile man. He has inspired me to perform at my peak potential, to be totally committed and to develop a passion for excellence.鈥

Belmonte finished her Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering degree from De La Salle University in December 2018 under the DOST鈥檚 Engineering Research and Development for Technology program. She currently teaches at the聽聽and is also a researcher at the聽.
