The book focuses on the real-world application of the Philosophy for/with Children (P4wC) pedagogy to 鈥渃ultivate reasonableness in individuals through communities of philosophical inquiry鈥�, thereby offering a collection of not just theories penned by the scholars in every chapter, but also experiences, discoveries, and innovations on P4wC.

Moreover, the book delves into how the P4wC approach can be practiced in various settings, namely: academic, business consulting, textbook writing, peace education, and extremism prevention, among others.

UST graduate students, alumni, and Department of Philosophy academic staff also published individual chapters. They are: Ms. Venus Ae Kaiel Basa, Ms. Raphaella Elaine Miranda, Dr. Peter Elicor, Mr. and Prince Airick S. Gapo.

Bola帽os is a fellow researcher of Research Center for Culture, Arts, and the Humanities. The book was also co-edited by Asst. Prof. Leander Penaso Marquez of University of the Philippines-Diliman.

The Research Fortnight opened on February 28, 2023 with an opening ceremony graced by the Department of Science and Technology Secretary Hon. Renato Solidum, Jr., Ph.D. This included the launch of the Thomasian Research Repository, led by the UST Miguel de Benavides Library Chief Librarian Ms. Ma. Cecilia D. Lobo, and the opening of research exhibits at the Main Building lobby.

Activities of the research centers for the Research Fortnight include: 鈥淢abathalang Pag-aaral: Doing Filipino Theology and Religious Education in honor of Dr. Jose 鈥楰a Joe鈥� De Mesa鈥� by the Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics; the 鈥淚nternational Conference in Chemistry鈥�, 鈥淩esearch and Innovation and the UN SDGs (part 3)鈥�, 鈥淪a Kaalaman: Mini-symposium on the NRCP Program Sakalam Del Carmen Siargao鈥� by the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

The Research Center for Social Sciences and Education contributed the following activities: 鈥淩CSSED Policy Expo鈥�, 鈥淏artolome de las Casas, O.P. Research Conference鈥�, and the Rehabilitation Sciences Convention鈥�, while the Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities held talks focused on the theme 鈥淔raming the Future of Arts and Humanities Research: A Talk on Creative Industry and Creative AI鈥�.

The Center for Health Research and Movement Science and the Research Center for the Health Sciences offered webinars on 鈥淓vidence-Based Practice: Bridging the Gap between Research and Clinical Care鈥� and 鈥淧sychometric Studies in Health Sciences: An Introduction to Measurement Theory鈥�.

The TOMASInno Center held the 鈥淭OMASInno Forum 2023鈥� and the Innovation and Technology Support Office held the workshop on the 鈥淔undamentals of the Intellectual Property System鈥�.

The event, which was open to the public, was organized as a contribution in addressing the perceived gender gap in Philosophy. Common in many contexts is the apparent presence of bias in Philosophy that discriminates against women as argued by existing literature and studies. As a response, the Syllabi Gender Gap Project will aim to re-introduce female philosophers in the discussions toward more inclusive Philosophy syllabi.

A 鈥済ender gap鈥� is the disproportionate absence of women in a discipline or workforce, which can lead to an imbalance of rendition of rationalities and epistemologies that affects the climate of philosophical thinking.

This is perpetuated by the kind of knowledge fostered in the (virtual) classroom through the topics included in the syllabus that mostly underrepresents women. The syllabus, which envisions the kind of graduates an institution tries to mold, is instrumental in achieving learning outcomes for specific courses in the discipline and illustrates what discussions may foster in the classroom.

 The critical role of the course facilitator is to develop a shared space between voices that have traditionally spoken and those that have traditionally been silenced, and this can be done through having a robust syllabus that represents both the male and the female voices.

Organized with the first-year students of Philosophy, the webinar is a response to the call to pay attention to the syllabus and potentially address its gender gap. The first webinar of a series featured a speaker who discussed pedagogies and strategies in teaching ancient woman philosophers, a period dominated by the male superstars of the Greek world.

The Faculty of Arts and Letters Dean Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio, Ph.D., in her opening remarks, echoed the presence of the dominance of male personalities in the realm of Philosophy, recounting that patriarchy has aggravated the unfortunate conditions of women in society, such as exclusion from social and political life, and deprivation from opportunities, among others.

To support achieving a balance of male and female representation in Philosophy, Madrunio articulated the challenge to increase women presence in Philosophy by 鈥渟peaking about the female philosophers鈥� important contributions and works to Philosophy and society.鈥�

Dr. Sara Protasi, in her talk, showed that women also share in the development of Philosophy. Her discussion was anchored on her 2020 paper titled 鈥淭eaching Ancient Women Philosophers: A Case Study,鈥� citing the methodological hurdles and pedagogical challenges she faced in teaching ancient woman philosophers.

Protasi addressed the question 鈥渉ow to best teach ancient women philosophers鈥� and presented various strategies such as concept mapping, independent research, and creation of digital archives to approach the subject matter.

Assoc. Prof. Marella Ada M. Bola帽os, Ph.D., a faculty member from the Department of Philosophy, and Mr. Carlo G. Cadiz, a first year Philosophy student, served as reactors. Both agreed with the importance of women representation in Philosophy. Bola帽os further magnified the contributions of Filipino female philosophers in having a proportional representation of women in Philosophy, while Mr. Cadiz emphasized a point that he picked up from Dr. Protasi鈥檚 paper, which was to rediscover the forgotten women philosophers in the history of Philosophy.

The call is not to dominate the discipline; it is rather a call for proportional representation, for equity that yields to a certain degree of balance of rendition of rationalities, ontologies, and people. Such representation would lead to improving the climate in Philosophy, that men and women would flourish alongside each other.

11th Asia Political and International Studies Association, Thailand

At the 11th Asia Political and International Studies Association (APISA) Conference, held in Naresuan University, Phitsanulok, Thailand from October 20 to 21, 2017, Political Science students Angelo Pascual, Karl Cabarles, Drixel Mariano, Lexanne Garcia, Isaiah Reotutar and Karen
Marasigan presented papers on: Government Infrastructures and Human Population in Manila, Online Civic Action on the Burial of the Late President Marcos and NGO Activities to Protect the Environment in Coron, Palawan,

Meanwhile, , a faculty member, participated in the panel discussion on Political Institutions. The APISA Conference served as forum where academics and professionals in the area of Political Science gather to discuss issues not only on politics and but also on allied fields in the social sciences and humanities. The congress also served as venue for interaction among academics and scholars from different universities in the world.

2017 Salinan International Conference, Philippines

The three-day global conference was organized by the Filipinas Institute of Translation (FIT) in collaboration with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Translation experts and educations from different countries including the Philippines were invited as guest speakers.

Speakers were Dr. Lawrence Venuti (Temple University), Dr. Luise Von
Flotow (University of Ottawa) and Dr. Virgilio S. Almario (Commission on the Filipino Language) (CFL) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Malay World Conference, Philippines

Asst. Prof. Janet Atutubo presented a paper on the 鈥淪truggles for Independence of the Filipinos and Malays: A Common People鈥檚 Perspective鈥� at the Malay World Conference at the Manila Hotel and De la Salle University Manila held from September 14 to 16, 2017.

Topics discussed during the Conference were: Archeology, History, Sociology and Philosophy of South East Asia. The conference was well attended by faculty members of various universities in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darusalam, China, America and Indonesia. Asst. Prof. Myrna De Vera was also a participant.

Residential Workshop in Philosophy for Children, USA

Asst. Prof. Marella Ada V. Mancenido Bola帽os, Ph.D., of the Department of Philosophy, was one of the 20 participants of the annual Residential Workshop in Philosophy for Children held at the St. Marguerite鈥檚 Retreat House, Mendham, New Jersey, USA. Organized by The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children the workshop was facilitated by leading scholars in Philosophy for Children, namely, Maughn Gregory, David Kennedy,

Megan Laverty and Ariel Sykes. All four facilitators were trained by Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp who are founders of Philosophy for Children.

The week-long workshop discussed topics such as the philosophical and historical foundations of Philosophy for Children, hermeneutics of P4C, Philosophy of Childhood, Aesthetics and P4C, to name a few. Participants were also given the opportunity to facilitate a community of inquiry using Matthew Lipman鈥檚 philosophical novels.

The community of inquiry is used as classroom pedagogy in various schools
worldwide, and as evidenced by research, this pedagogy has increased the students鈥� ability to think critically, creatively and caringly.
