Faculty members and students from the Departmento ng Filipino, College of Education, presented papers on language, education, and culture at the 6th International Conference on Asian and Philippines Studies (ICAPS), held from June 1 to 3, 2023 in Silliman University (SU), Dumaguete City.

Current department chair Assoc. Prof. Zendel Rosario M. Taruc, PhD, and former department chair Prof. Roberto D. Ampil, PhD, lead the delegates from the university who attended the onsite and online sessions.

Taruc presented her paper 鈥淎ng Pagsasalin bilang Pedagohiya sa Pagtuturo ng Filipino at
Komunikasiyon sa mga Tiyak na Larang鈥 while Ampil shared his analysis 鈥淚na(aruga/abuso): Mga Imahe at Gampanin ng Ina sa mga Piling Pelikula ni Laurice Guillen.鈥

The papers presented by other faculty members also encompassed multi and interdisciplinary themes, which included Assoc. Prof. Catherine Cocabo-Yao鈥檚 鈥淚nang-Guro sa Panahon ng Pandemya: Mga Isyu at Hamon sa mga Ina sa Paggabay sa mga Anak sa kanilang Online Learning鈥; Assoc. Prof. Josephine Villegas鈥檚 鈥淎ng Antas ng Mathematics Anxiety ng mga Mag-aaral ng Junior High School na may Kaugnayan sa Kanilang Akademikong Pagganap sa Matematika鈥; and Mr. Mark Anthony J. Etcoba帽ez鈥檚 鈥淧agtitipon ng mga Salitang Ginagamit sa Construction Site: Batayan sa Pagbuo ng Glosaryong Asintada.鈥 Etcoba帽ez together with Ms. Charlotte Malinao discussed, 鈥淢ga Hamon at Oportunidad sa Pagtuturo ng Pagsasalin sa Kaso ng UST: Mga Mungkahi sa Pagbuo ng E-Kagamitang Pampagtuturo.鈥

Filipino major students under the Bachelor of Secondary Education program presented in two groups. Ann Karen Alonzo, Princess Angel Galono, and Hannah Quevedo discussed 鈥淎ng Penomenolohiya ng Konektibismo sa mga Gurong Nagtuturo ng Filipino sa Bagong Normal.鈥 Meanwhile, Shane C. Mia, Julius I. Pontillas, and Maria Ysabela C. Sicat presented their findings through their paper, 鈥淧agsusuri sa Kalidad ng mga Piling Modyul sa Filipino para sa Ika-8 Baitang ng Departamento ng Edukasiyon Mula sa Rehiyon ng SOCCSKSARGEN.鈥

Some 250 onsite and 130 online participants attended the conference, organized by the De La Salle University (DLSU) College of Liberal Arts, Silliman University-Philosophy Department, Danum (Dalubhasaan ng mga Umuusbong na Mag-aaral sa Araling Filipino), DLSU Salita (Sentro sa Pagsasalin, Intelektuwalisasyon at Adbokasiya), and the Andrew Gonzalez Philippine Citation Index.

Asst. Prof. Catherine C. Cocabo and Mr. Billy De Guzman joined Sikolohiyang Pilipino (SP) experts at the 46th Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino held from November 24 to 26, 2022.

The duo from the Departamento ng Filipino 鈥 College of Education, discussed the results of their research 鈥Edu-Aksyon. Ang Distansya ng mga Mahihirap sa Distance Learning sa Panahon ng Pandemya.鈥

Conducted in September 2020, the research used purposive sampling to acquire data among impoverished students in Cabuyao, Laguna.

With the theme 鈥淪P bilang Mapagpabagong-Isip,鈥 the national conference is organized by Pambansang Samahan sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino.

Registered Psychologists (RPsy), Registered Psychometricians (RPm), Registered Guidance Counselors (RGC), Registered Social Workers (RSW), and Licensed Professional Teachers (LPT) attend the annual gathering.

Cocabo and De Guzman鈥檚 research paper is forthcoming in the December 2022 issue of MALAY Journal.

The UST Simbahayan Community Development Office (UST SIMBAHAYAN) in partnership with the Dunong Tomas cluster from the Junior High School, Senior High School, College of Education, and College of Information and Computing Sciences, organized the second webinar for the series 鈥淏oto Pilipino: Boto Mo Para sa Pagbabago鈥 on February 5, 2022.


The said event was also aligned with the second Community Service Day for A.Y. 2021-2022, the bi-annual advocacy event of UST SIMBAHAYAN that promotes the proactive response to the call of Pope Francis鈥 Laudato Si鈥.


With the theme Kapaligiran at Halalan, discussions did not only center on the elections, politics, and livelihood, but also on issues related to the environment. Asst. Prof. Froilan A. Alipao, the Director of UST SIMBAHAYAN, delivered the welcome remarks. It was followed by the insightful talk of Mr. Maverick Russel Flores, the Communications Campaigner of Greenpeace Philippines, titled 鈥2022: The Year of Climate Action.鈥


Flores stressed that the Philippines urgently needs climate justice since our country is continuously battling the climate crisis coupled with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He also stated that environmental and climate issues are at the bottom of the priorities in the current electoral discourse.
Dr. Froilan C. Calilung from the Political Science Department of the Faculty of Arts and Letters had his presentation on the 鈥淎nalysis of Environmental Platforms of the 2022 Presidential Candidates.鈥 He shared a concise summary of the six front-running presidentiables鈥 environmental agenda on the following issues: renewable energy, commitment to the international environmental agreements, creation of a Department of Disaster Resilience, mining, plastic and solid waste management, and the West Philippine Sea.


Mr. Rodne Galiche, the Executive Director of Living Laudato Si鈥 Philippines, discussed 鈥淟audato Si鈥 and Ecological Teachings of the Church.鈥 Through the seven Laudato Si鈥 Goals: 1) Response to the cry of the earth, 2) Response to the cry of the poor, 3) Ecological economics, 4) Adoption of simple lifestyles, 5) Ecological education, 6) Ecological spirituality, and 7) Community engagements, the voters can use these as standards in deciding who amongst the national and local candidates will have the political will to push forward with climate justice.


The program culminated with the closing remarks of Asst. Prof. Evalyn B. Abiog, Ph.D., the Asst. Director of UST SIMBAHAYAN. The event was facilitated by Asst. Prof. Catherine C.
