The 91性息港 reached its highest number of scholarly materials indexed in Scopus in 2022.

Running tally from Scopus, the Elsevier-owned scholarly indexing service, as of February 27, 2023 shows that UST (Scopus ID number: 60071488) had 354 scholarly materials (mostly journal articles) in 2022. Scopus adds that the 354 materials are broken down into published works (318) and 鈥渁rticles in press鈥 (36). These materials were authored solely by Thomasians or were co-authored by Thomasians and research partners from other academic and non-academic affiliations.

The 354 materials cover journal articles (274), book reviews (35), conference papers lodged in proceedings (22), 鈥渘otes鈥 (22), book chapters (six), letters to the editor (six), editorials (two) and erratum (1). Spanning multiple disciplinal areas, the leading disciplines where the scholarly materials were lodged came from 鈥淢edicine鈥 (128), 鈥淪ocial Sciences鈥 (62), 鈥淎gricultural and Biological Sciences鈥 (42), 鈥淏iochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology鈥 (40), and 鈥淎rts and Humanities鈥 (32). The UST materials landed in 26 categorizations of disciplines in the Scopus database for 2022.

This 2022 total is the highest since Scopus tallied scholarly works authored by researchers鈥攆aculty members and students鈥攆rom UST since 1946.

Among those currently affiliated with UST, the top producers of Scopus-indexed academic journal articles tallied in 2022 is Prof. Daniel Joseph Berdida of the College of Nursing (15), Prof. Marc Eric Reyes, PhD of the College of Science (13), Prof. Frederick Masangkay of the Faculty of Pharmacy (11), former Faculty of Engineering academic staff Adrvin Kester Ong (11), Prof. Ross Vasquez, PhD of the Faculty Pharmacy (11), Prof. Marri Jmelou Roldan also of the Faculty of Pharmacy (10), and Prof. Allan de Guzman, PhD of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (10).

Meanwhile, out of the 2,042 journal articles that Thomasian researchers have produced for Scopus-indexed journals since Scopus began the count, De Guzman has produced the most number: 129. Professors Grecebio Jonathan Alejandro, Dr. rer. nat. of the Graduate School and the College of Science (97), Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat. (63), Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD (60), Allan Patrick Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat. of the College of Science (55), Raymond Rosales, MD (53) of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD (47) of the College of Science, Marc Eric S. Reyes, PhD (44) of the College of Science, and Sandra Navarra, MD (42) of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery followed suit.

The 91性息港 Hospital (Scopus ID: 60071489), for its part, has separately produced 509 scholarly materials since 1955, and 45 in 2022. Medical doctors teaching at UST also affiliate themselves with the UST Hospital.

The Scopus index is the database used by Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) when tallying the research productivity of universities in their annual world university rankings. UST has been ranked in the QS World University Rankings for multiple years, and recently received a 鈥淩eporter鈥 status in the 2023 THE World University Rankings last year.

The running tally of scholarly materials indexed in Scopus shows that UST produced 225 materials in 2017, 175 in 2018, 228 in 2019, 278 in 2020, and 333 in 2021.

Professor Allan B. de Guzman, PhD of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education joined experts from more than twenty countries in the March 17-19, 2022 鈥淓ducating for democracy in a fragmented world鈥 conference organized by the Gravissimus Educationis Foundation, established in 2015 to help implement the provisions of the Second Vatican Council.

During the conference, de Guzman presented the findings of three studies that elaborated on the role of social studies teachers in teaching democratic principles and civic engagement. The studies involved are the following:

a)     Social studies teachers鈥 ability to integrate social problems and issues and civic engagement in students鈥 learning;

b)     Teaches鈥 knowledge of 21st-century democracy holds the key for their delivery of promoting civic engagement in classroom settings; and

c)     Teachers鈥 abilities to exercise practical-evaluative teaching methods and to contain their risk-taking behavior may help enrich school curricula鈥檚 integration of civic engagement by students.

All these three smaller studies form part of the UST-led Local Antenna Team鈥檚 project, headed by de Guzman, who is joined by RCSSED Director Belinda D.V. de Castro, PhD and RCSSED Research Associate Joel L. Adamos, EdD. The Philippine study is part of a multi-country research project handled by Fondazione Gravissimus Educationis, the education-oriented of the Pontifical Council for Catholic Education formed in October 2015.

UST is the local antenna university (or local implementor) of Gravissimus Educationis鈥 project titled Democracy: an educational urgency in pluricultural and pluri-religious contexts.

UST-RCSSED as the Philippine antenna not only produced three studies. The Center also staged international webinars and a certificate program for various public school teachers of social studies nationwide. The Center also launched a project , titled ADVOCATUS: Championing Democracy through Education, for parties to see details about the Gravissimus Educationis-funded project in the Philippines.

Fondazione Gravissimus Educationis鈥 three-day conference was held at Libera Universit脿 Maria Santissima Assunta. Foundation Secretary-General Msgr. Guy-R茅al Thivierge spearheaded the organizing of the event.

In an interview with Fausta Speranza published in the Vatican News website, de Guzman emphasized his and the team鈥檚 belief in 鈥渢he power of education because we believe that schooling will lead to democracy.鈥 De Guzman added that teachers have a unique role to play in helping Filipino learners look at the problems surrounding them and the Filipino society.

The conference brought together experts from 14 universities representing 13 countries. It provided a venue to localize democracy issues to different contexts and view these from angles such as academic, economic, and spiritual.

The 13 other partner Catholic universities include the Universidade Cat贸lica de Mo莽ambique, (Mozambique), the Universit茅 Catholique d鈥橝frique de l鈥橭uest (Cote d’Ivoire); the Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Chile (Chile); Universidad Anahuac (Mexico); the Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica del Per煤 (Peru); the Pontificia Universidade Cat贸lica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil); The Catholic University of America (USA); Christ University (India); the Ukrainian Catholic University (Ukraine); the Instituto Universitario de Investigaci贸n Ortega y Gasset (Spain); the Libera Universit脿 Maria Santissima Assunta (Italy); the Universit脿 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy); and Universit茅 Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (Lebanon).

Professor Allan B. De Guzman, PhD, a gerontologist from the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and a faculty member of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, recently published a research article entitled 鈥淎ge knows no bounds: A latent content analysis of social media comments toward older adults鈥 engagement in sports activities.鈥 Joining de Guzman were John Christopher B. Mesana and Jonas Airon M. Roman.

The article, published in the Journal of Applied Gerontology, a Q1 journal by SAGE Publications, recognized the engagement of older adults in sports activities and with modern technology, such engagement is easily captured on video. Looking at 62 YouTube videos featuring older adults, the qualitative study conducted a latent content analysis of 7,546 comments posted on the said videos.

The study documented the emergence of a 鈥減laying field model鈥 that was anchored on 鈥渄ualistic perspectives鈥 of aging as engagement and aged as engaged.

of the lectured on Pedagogy on Culture-based education on July 20, 2020 in a webinar organized by the National Commission on Cultural Education, which runs the Philippine Cultural Education Program.

De Guzman, a known advocate of cultural pursuits, encouraged the educators to consistently raise questions in pedagogy. 鈥淨uestion the way we teach, and we question the way students learn,鈥 de Guzman said.

Moreover, de Guzman highlighted that an educator must have a firm understanding of culture. According to him, the educator must balance the three aspects of learning culture: enculturation, acculturation, then toward inculturation. 鈥淜araniwan pong nabibigyan ng pansin ay ang acculturation, o ang pagkatuto ng mga bata ng mga iba鈥檛-ibang kultura,鈥 de Guzman said.

De Guzman said the growth of culture-based education as a transdisciplinary process was a long and challenging choice. 鈥淏ago natin marating ang transdisciplinary, mahalaga na tayo ay mag-intradisciplinary, multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, at interdisciplinary,鈥 de Guzman said. Transdisciplinary was creating a unity of intellectual frameworks beyond the disciplinary perspectives

鈥淗inding-hindi tayo maaaring magturo ng ating asignatura gamit ang kultura hangga鈥檛 hindi natin mastered, o alam na alam ang ating itinuturo. At much more, ang sinasabi nating kultura (We cannot teach out subjects using culture unless we have mastered the subject matter and more so, culture itself),鈥 he added.

In 2011, de Guzman was named Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher for Higher Education. Apart from being a multi-awarded educator, de Guzman is also one of the University鈥檚 most prolific researchers. His expertise is on Adult Education and Educational Gerontology, Teacher Education, and Leadership Behavior and Comparative Education. Apart from CTHM, he also teaches at the Graduate School and is a researcher at the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education.
