]]> Now on its third year, the National Virtual Tourism and Hospitality Conference was held last October 28, 2022 (Friday), via the UST Cloud Campus. It was organized by the 91性息港 College of Tourism and Hospitality Management and the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education. The event served as a platform to discuss the current practices and standards of the tourism and hospitality industry vis-脿-vis the theories being taught to the learners, and helped participants see the significance and value of industry practices and standards aligned with the courses taken by the learners. The conference also aimed analyze the difference between the current practices and standards of the tourism and hospitality industry vis-脿-vis to the theories being taught to the learners, and to assess how the learners could utilize the learnings manifested once that they will be joining the industry.

The theme, Tourism and Hospitality Academe-Government Collaboration towards Sustainable Development, directly highlights the significance of academe-government partnership and collaboration in developing sustainable plans and programs for the tourism and hospitality industry and its related stakeholders.

Dr. Reil G. Cruz, Associate Professor from the Asian Institute of Tourism of the University of the Philippines Diliman, was the Plenary Speaker for the virtual event and shared on the current academe-government collaboration in the tourism and hospitality industry. Also, different academic staff from CTHM served as the Members of the Panel of Discussants who shared their experiences on research projects with local government units.

Asst. Prof. Fredeswindo R. Medina, MCHS, CHE, CGSP, shared his group鈥檚 experiences on the Municipality of Maragondon, Cavite Natural and Cultural Heritage Mapping Project. Mr. Arnulfo Ricardo A. Butiong, MMC (Tourism Management) and Ms. Kathrine Camille A. Nagal, MBA (Hospitality Management) shared the project outcomes and their experiences during the conceptualization of the Davao City Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Expositions (MICE) Strategic Management Plan 2022-2026. Lastly, Assoc. Prof. Atty. Gezzez Giezi G. Granado, DCL, CHE, shared their project output and experiences while conceptualizing the Samar Island Natural Park (SINP) Sustainable Tourism and Strategic Development Plan 2022-2031.

]]> The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM), together with the UST Graduate School 鈥 Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (GS-CCCPET) and the UST Simbahayan Community Development Office, is conducting the Natural and Cultural Heritage Mapping Project and Preliminary Assessment of Tourist Sites and Attraction in the Municipality of Maragondon, Cavite.

The project鈥檚 objectives are to identify and document the distinct natural, built, intangible, and tangible heritages of Maragondon, Cavite covering 27 barangays; to create heritage awareness and appreciation amongst stakeholders and community around the town; to provide a basis for a comprehensive master development plan for the town and initiate local heritage ordinances through participatory approach and heritage utilization; and to provide an impetus for the promotion of cultural industries and develop tourism campaign or any heritage driven projects based on the heritage outputs of the town.

The project began with classes from September 16 until October 5, 2021, facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Eric B. Zerrudo, PhD, the Director of UST GS-CCCPET, and Ms. Beverly M. Bautista, Project Coordinator. During the virtual classes, the facilitators discuss topics on how to document the natural, built, intangible, local history, and movable heritages of the community. An on-site seminar workshop on October 18 and 19 will complement the virtual classes and focus on how to utilize the documented heritage resources through tourism and hospitality.

The preliminary assessments of different tourist sites and attractions will also be facilitated by #TeamMaragondon from UST CTHM headed by Assoc. Prof. Atty. Gezzez Giezi G. Granado, DCL, CHE, the Dean of the College, together with Asst. Prof. Jane G. Devanadera, MSTM, CHE, CGSP (Project Co-Director), Asst. Prof. Fredeswindo R. Medina, MCHS, CHE, CGSP (Team Representative), Asst. Prof. Maria Concepcion A. Ang, MBA, CHE, CGSP (Budget Officer and Writer/Researcher), Mr. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MACHS (Project Coordinator), Ms. Karla Paricia G. Colmenar, MDS (Writer/Researcher), Mr. Godofredo Cezar D. Vizconde, LPT, MBA (Writer/Researcher), and Mr. Reinald A. Andaya, MSHM (Writer/Researcher). The project is supported by the UST Simbahayan Community Development Office through the help of Asst. Prof. Froilan A. Alipao, MCD, Director and Asst. Prof. Joreen T. Rocamora, Ph.D., the CTHM Community Development Coordinator.

Asst. Prof. Medina, a native from Maragondon, said that the project is vital for the 鈥渄evelopment of Maragondon Cultural Tourism program through improving their identified and documented cultural properties of the community.鈥

The project is in partnership with the Municipal Government of Maragondon, Cavite, headed by Hon. Reynaldo A. Rillo. The implementation of the project is also in line with the celebration of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) World Tourism Day 2021, with the theme 鈥淭ourism for Inclusive Growth.

]]> The (OAR) held its first-ever Appreciation Night on December 7, 2018 at the Dr. Robert C. Sy Grand Ballroom of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building, Thomasian Alumni Center, to thank and acknowledge those who supported the office in their projects in unifying and strengthening the Thomasian alumni community.

According to OAR Director Asst. Prof. Fredeswindo R. Medina, 鈥淭his event is a symbol of sincere gratitude to our benefactors, partners and sponsors for their utmost support and generosity to all the activities that we have successfully accomplished throughout the years.鈥

Since the establishment of the Office of Alumni Relations, the office has gained the trust and support of different individuals and companies as shown by the companies that are sponsors and partners of the Thomasian Alumni Card. The perks and privileges forged by the office and these companies have been used and enjoyed by thousands of Thomasian alumni across the country. The annual Rector鈥檚 Cup, one of the projects handled by the OAR, has also been successful in raising funds for Thomasian student athletes who need assistance for their competitions. During the program, Medina thanked everyone for their relentless efforts and contributions that made the office stronger each year, saying that the success of the Alumni Relations is also the success of everyone.

Some of the awardees included: Partners of the Thomasian Alumni Card such as the , , UST , Hotel San Marco, Resorts World Manila, Winford Hotel, Solaire Resorts, and Belmont Hotel and Resorts. Also awarded were sponsors of the Alumni Relations鈥 events that included Phenix Garuda, AIMM Builder and Construction Supply, Ironcon Builders and Development Corp, and Tokwing Construction Corp.

Awardees received glass plaques with the initials of the 91性息港. The event was hosted by Ms. Maita Oebanda of the UST Museum, an alumna of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and a frequent voice-over talent and host of various University events. Also present was UST Alumni Association Inc. President Dr. Evelyn Songco.

Dr. Jose Evangelista delivered an inspiring and heartfelt closing speech where he reminisced the early beginnings of the Thomasian Alumni Center or the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building we know today. 鈥淚t used to be nothing but a vision,鈥 said Dr. Evangelista. He thanked everyone who made this vision tangible and alive.

]]> With the theme 鈥淕urong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad鈥 (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng UST (Honor of UST) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

鈥淣apakalaki ang nagawa at naiambag ng mg Tomasinong guro sa mga ma-tagumpay na Tomasino. Sigurado ako na kabilang kayo sa inspirasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa kanilang pagsusumikap na makamit at matupad ang kanilang mga pangarap. Hindi lamang iyan maliit na bagay,鈥 Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. 鈥淧inapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba鈥檛-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,鈥

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. 鈥淎ng dignidad ng guro ay nakabase sa kanyang atas, sa kanyang mandato, sa kanyang responsibilidad; samakatuwid, sa kanyang tungkuling ginagampanan: ang paghubog sa mga kamalayan upang masusing timbangin ang katwiran at turuan ang mag-aaral kung papaano umiwas sa panlilinlang, manindigan sa katotohanan, at ipaglaban ang katarungan.鈥

鈥淎ng saligan ng dignidad ng pagiging guro ay ayon sa antas ng kanyang pagtupad sa atas na iginagawad sa kanya; ito ang nag-aangat sa guro. Ginagawa siyang kakaiba at nagtatangi sa kanya sa ibang mga larangan,鈥 Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in UST as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. 鈥淪ila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,鈥 he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle 鈥渞epeater sections鈥 and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: 鈥Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa UST.鈥

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng UST, except the Gawad Benavides).
